Namakarana is the ceremony of naming a baby. Nama means ‘name’ and Karana means ‘to make or to create’. This ceremony is performed to choose and name a newborn, using astrology and traditional methods of naming. This ceremony is done to make the lovable bond between all family members and the baby, this ceremony takes place after the 10 days of delivery as a period before that is considered to be an impure stage.

The babies name is chosen in such a way that it should contain a specified number of syllables and vowels and it should be easy to pronounce and feel pleasant to sound, indicate the sex, signify fame, wealth, or power. The ceremony is performed by whispering the name of a baby in the right ear and different mantras are chanted for the well being of the baby.
